The best airline for one trip may be the wrong choice for another. A short nonstop flight in an ordinary seat can suit you better than a longer connection on a carrier known for premium service. Compare the exact itinerary, aircraft and fare rather than treating an airline’s reputation as a promise.
Start with the trip you are buying
Check the operating carrier as well as the name selling the ticket. A codeshare can be flown by a different airline, with different seating and services. Compare total journey time, connection length and whether a missed connection would leave practical alternatives.
Look at both the outbound and return journeys. A comfortable outbound flight does little to solve an overnight connection on the return. Ask whether nearby airports or a different travel day produce a more useful itinerary.
Compare the cabin and the complete price
Review the seat map for the actual aircraft and cabin. Seat width, legroom, recline, power outlets and entertainment may differ within one fleet. Aircraft substitutions are possible, so avoid paying for a single feature you cannot accept losing.
Include bags, seat selection, meals and change conditions in the price comparison. Two economy fares on the same flight may have different restrictions. Airline marketing photos often show a different cabin from the seat you are considering.
Plan for disruptions and assistance
Read the airline’s customer service commitments and contact options before booking. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s customer service dashboard helps compare specified commitments when a cancellation or delay is within an airline’s control.
If accessibility assistance or a particular accommodation is needed, confirm the process with the operating airline. Keep written information and allow time for requests that must be made before travel. General rankings do not tell you whether your individual needs will be met.
Avoid unsupported safety rankings
An award for cabin service is not a safety assessment. Statements such as ‘never had an accident’ also need careful historical definitions and can be misleading. Use official oversight and investigation information for safety questions, and choose your itinerary on concrete needs rather than an unsupported list of the world’s safest airlines.
