Satire: this is an aviation joke, not a factual explanation of flight. If airplanes flew using magic, flight school would have a very different syllabus. Lesson one: never leave your wand in a checked bag. Lesson two: the checklist is still mandatory, even when your instructor is a wizard.
The secret spell before takeoff
Our fictional captain adjusts a headset, reads a checklist and announces that the cabin is ready. To the untrained observer, this resembles ordinary preparation. To a determined conspiracy theorist, it is obviously the ancient spell of Please Let All the Bags Fit.
The first officer knows a second spell: Confirm the Runway. It requires two people to agree on the same answer, which is an impressive feat even without sorcery. The airplane, unimpressed by theatrics, waits for sufficient thrust and airspeed.
Turbulence and the snack-cart curse
In this imaginary universe, turbulence arrives whenever someone finally gets comfortable with a full cup of coffee. Rival airlines may be blamed in the joke, but the real atmosphere does not coordinate its movements with the beverage service.
Flight attendants have their own superpower: noticing the one bag that refuses to fit under the seat. No spell can turn an oversized suitcase into a small personal item, although many passengers continue to attempt it.
The real explanation
Wings generate lift through their interaction with moving air; engines provide thrust, and pilots manage the airplane through training, procedures and flight controls. Turbulence has atmospheric and wake-related causes. There are no cockpit incantations, airline curses or enchanted jet streams.
For the factual version, read our guide to how airplanes fly. Or explore NASA’s lift explanation. The engineering is interesting enough without a secret wizard license.
