Packing works best when you plan for the actual trip: weather, activities, laundry access and the baggage allowance on your ticket. Lay everything out once before it goes into a suitcase.
Start with the airline allowance
Check the size, weight and number of bags allowed by the operating airline. A carry-on label on a suitcase is not a universal promise that it fits every aircraft or fare. Include connecting flights and any smaller aircraft in your check.
Keep essentials accessible
Keep travel documents, prescribed medication, valuables and items you need during the journey in your cabin bag. Carry medication with its identifying information and check the destination’s rules for the particular medicine before an international trip.
Put a change of clothing and arrival-day necessities somewhere you can reach if a checked bag is delayed. Save accommodation and transport details offline as well as in your email.
Pack clothing for combinations
Choose pieces that work together, then match the quantity to your laundry plans. Wear bulky items when comfortable to do so. Packing cubes can separate categories; they do not increase your airline’s weight allowance.
Review restricted items
Use the TSA item checker for U.S. screening rules and check departure-airport rules elsewhere. Security permission and airline permission are separate checks.
Spare batteries and power banks need cabin handling. If a bag is gate-checked, remove them as explained in the FAA baggage guidance.
Do a final checkout
Close and weigh the bag, verify the address label and test that the essentials can be reached without unpacking everything. Remove items you packed only because there was space, especially duplicates you can do without.
