In-flight entertainment and internet access are different services. An aircraft may offer movies on a seatback screen, entertainment streamed from an onboard system, internet connectivity, or some combination. Knowing which service your flight offers prevents unnecessary surprises after boarding.
A screen or a personal device
Seatback entertainment gives you a screen built into the seat area. Content and functions depend on the airline and aircraft. Bring suitable headphones and check whether you need an adapter if you want to use your own set.
Other aircraft provide a local entertainment portal for your phone or tablet. Connecting to the aircraft’s Wi-Fi network can allow access to that portal without giving you access to the wider internet. Some services require an app or compatible browser, so check instructions while you still have a reliable connection.
Download essential documents and a few entertainment options in advance. An aircraft substitution, technical fault or unfamiliar device setting can affect the experience even when entertainment is advertised.
Internet access has its own conditions
Onboard internet uses equipment that connects the aircraft to networks outside it. Speed and availability can vary with the system, flight location and number of people using it. A messaging-only service is not the same as a connection that supports large downloads or video.
Airlines may offer free access, paid access or a mixture with eligibility conditions. Check the current guidance for the operating airline and route. For example, Delta’s onboard Wi-Fi page distinguishes its connection options and explains how passengers log in.
Treat advertised availability as something to confirm for the particular flight. A previous experience with the same airline does not prove that another aircraft has identical equipment.
Prepare without depending on connectivity
Keep your boarding pass, accommodation details and arrival transport information available offline. Charge devices before travel and check which batteries and charging accessories are permitted in your baggage.
Follow the crew’s instructions about airplane mode and device use. Use headphones, protect your screen from nearby eyes when handling private information, and plan important work so a lost connection does not leave you without an alternative.
