Assigned seating replaced open seating
Southwest states that it transitioned to assigned seating on January 27, 2026. Its assigned-seating guide describes Standard, Preferred and Extra Legroom options and the associated fare benefits. The seat and selection rights included with your purchase depend on the fare and applicable benefits.
Check your reservation rather than expecting to choose any open seat after boarding. Review the current boarding instructions on your boarding pass, and confirm any accessibility or family-travel arrangements directly with the airline. Advice about obtaining an old A/B/C position does not describe the current system.
Compare total cost, including bags
Checked-baggage charges and exceptions now matter when comparing fares. Southwest’s optional travel charges page lists current fees and the benefits associated with eligible fares, status and cardmembers. Do not assume that a benefit advertised for one traveler applies to every booking or companion.
The useful comparison includes the fare, seat needs, checked bags and any other services you expect to use. Keep the conditions of refunds, changes and credits in the comparison too. A lower initial fare may not produce the lowest total price for your trip.
Prepare for the actual itinerary
Confirm airports, connection times and baggage limits before purchase. If the journey includes an international destination, check the required travel documents and entry rules. Before leaving for the airport, review flight status, check-in requirements and the boarding pass.
