A long layover can be useful time, but the connection remains the priority. Work backward from boarding and any required check-in, security or terminal transfer before choosing an activity.
Find out how the connection works
Check the onward flight’s terminal, whether bags are transferred and whether the flights are on one booking or separate tickets. A self-transfer can require baggage collection and a new check-in.
The Heathrow connection guide illustrates why these details matter: its connecting passengers face security checks, and separate-ticket journeys are handled differently. Read the instructions for your actual airport.
Choose a comfortable airport plan
Locate your next departure area first. Then find a meal, a charging point or somewhere to rest. Compare a lounge or airport hotel with what you actually need; access, opening hours, showers and quiet space vary.
Download something to read, organize travel photos or take an easy walk in permitted terminal areas. Keep your bags secure and set an alarm if you rest.
Leaving the airport requires more than spare hours
Check whether you are allowed to enter the country, including visa or electronic authorization requirements for your nationality. Estimate both directions of ground travel, queues and a buffer for disruption. A transit arrangement may not permit a city visit.
If the usable time is narrow, stay at the airport. A quick excursion is optional; missing the flight can affect far more of the trip than an afternoon’s sightseeing.
Recheck before boarding
Watch official departure updates, allow time for any gate change and refill your water when permitted. Keep documents and medication with you rather than leaving them in a lounge locker or hotel room.
